How does it work when I upgrade from Resolve 15 to 16?

It’s really quite easy, simply download the free update from the Support page on the Blackmagic website. It will ask you to upgrade your database where your session data is stored. It is highly recommended to backup your database before doing this. This should be done using the backup command in the Resolve Project Manager prior to installing the new software. The backup is mainly for security purposes but also allows you to revert back to the earlier version if desired. If you upgrade a database, it is not possible to downgrade.

Can I use my Resolve 15 project in 16?

Yes, you can certainly do this. However once you save the project, it will be saved in the Resolve 16 format and therefore cannot be opened in Resolve 15.

How can I upgrade from Resolve 16 to Resolve 16 Studio?

This is extremely easy. First I would recommend that you do a database backup that can be done in the Resolve Project Manager by clicking on the Database Backup button. This is merely for data safety. I would then de-install Resolve by using the Uninstall Resolve application that is included with your Resolve installation. The next step is to install Resolve Studio. Once completed you will need an internet connection if you purchased an activation code license in order to activate your license. If you are using a license dongle version, simply plug in the dongle. Once this is done you should be ready to go. All projects created with Resolve 16 will be available in Resolve 16 Studio as your database remains after the uninstall of the free version of Resolve.

I currently have the free version of Resolve and am thinking about buying Resolve Studio, what are the advantages?

While the free version of Resolve offers a tremendous amount of tools, it’s important to note that Resolve Studio allows you to achieve the maximum experience for working with your media. First off, Resolve is limited to one GPU processing unit. Resolve uses GPUs or graphic cards for hardware acceleration. Resolve Studio has no limitations in this area. Your only limitation is the maximum amount of graphic cards supported by the operating system whether it be macOS, Windows or Linux. Secondly noise reduction support is only included in Resolve Studio. You will also find that only a small amount of Resolve FX plugins are included with the free version whereas Resolve Studio includes them all. Resolve is limited to working with a maximum resolution of 4K UHD whereas Resolve Studio will work with any resolution selected. Additionally 3D Stereoscopic is only supported by Resolve Studio. Finally, Collaboration Mode support is available only on Resolve Studio.

When I want to connect a grading monitor to Resolve 16, do I need a Decklink card or UltraStudio 4K?

Resolve 16 Studio has the option whereby connecting a monitor to your computer, it can be allocated as a grading monitor. It is important to note while this will work perfectly, it is only displayed in 8bit. If you would like a higher bit rate, it is recommended to use a Decklink card or an UltraStudio unit for attaching your grading monitor.
